What does 'Thinking' mean before a reply?

Determining whether to wait based on thinking, tools, and approval status.

Thinking status does not mean completion

Some models output visible reasoning content before the final answer, so the interface may first show a thinking status. This indicates the reply is still being generated; it does not mean the conclusion has been verified, nor is it a countdown guaranteed to finish within a fixed time.

Agents may also be waiting for tools or approval; these statuses should be considered separately from the model's thinking.

How to decide whether to take action

First check the latest tool card or status prompt to avoid resending the same question every few seconds.

If you only need an executable next step, explicitly ask for the most critical check first, then gradually expand. This helps judge whether it is worth continuing to wait; do not assume that a long thinking display means deeper or more accurate results—always verify the final basis.

  1. If content is being output, wait for this round to continue.
  2. If waiting for approval is shown, review the specific action and choose accordingly.
  3. If a clear error is shown, handle it according to the error type.
  4. If you decide to stop, first understand whether any tool operation has already been completed.

How to reduce unnecessary waiting

Clearly specify the task goal, scope, and output length—for example, first request conclusions and key evidence, then deepen as needed. Complex materials and multi-step verification usually require more work; simply urging 'faster' does not necessarily reduce steps. The amount of thinking text is not a quality indicator; the conclusion and evidence should always be checked in the end.
